No surge pricing. Ever.

French taxi fares are set by the county prefecture, not by the driver and not by an app. Here is how the price of your journey is worked out.

How a French taxi is priced

Every journey starts with a pick-up charge of €2.12, then a rate per kilometre. The rate depends on the time of day and on whether I drive back empty — that is the whole of it. There is no busy-hour multiplier, no booking fee and no platform commission.

The minimum fare for any journey is €8. It is the county order that says so, not me.

Meter, or a price agreed in advance

Booked ahead. On a journey booked in advance I can agree a fixed price before we set off. That price is what you pay, even if the A13 is jammed. It is what I do on anything long — airports, Paris, Rouen.

Hailed on the spot. The meter runs, at the county rate. You see it, and the receipt shows the breakdown. Above €25 a receipt is issued automatically; below that, ask and you get one.

When it costs more

Nights, 7pm to 7amhigher rate per kilometre
Sundays and public holidayssame higher rate, all day
Fifth passenger€4
Each bag beyond three€2
Waiting on site€26.70 per hour, daytime

Every supplement set by the county order is told to you before departure, never added afterwards. The first 45 minutes of waiting on site are not charged.
